Copernicus. 3D Image
Human ego instinctively sets man smack in the center of the universe. For thousands of years, Ptolemy, Aristotle and the Church maintained the doctrine that the planets and heavens, even the sun, revolved around the earth. Church interpretations of scripture were so strictly enforced that anyone opposing them was accused of heresy, silenced, or killed--the Crusades and the Inquisition eliminated scientists, artists and blasphemers alike. Needless to say it was a tough time for progressive thought and expression throughout the "Dark Ages". In the sixteenth century, during the Age of Enlightenment , an elderly Nicholas Copernicus, silenced most his life, completed mappings of the planets and their orbits using mathematics and telescope-less observations. In pursuit of his passion, cleverly faced down "scripture", diplomatically approached the church, kept his head, and corrected man's place in God's creation. This 3D image is kudos to the Father of Modern Astronomy and others not needing to be silenced. Value your expression ;)
