3D Swimmer Series

The premiere exhibition of the 3D Swimmer Series was hosted by The Charles-Baltivik Gallery August 25th-September 1, 2000 and opened with a wine and cheese reception. The show was advertised in Provincetown Magazine with a full page ad and a write up in the arts section.

The 3D Swimmer Series is a collection of 2D photo-digital artwork which transform into 3D waterscapes when viewed through glasses using current 3D technology. With the 3D specs on, layers of rippled water separate around the posed nudes, creating the illusion of floating or swimming in three dimensions. The images portray moments of isolation, purification, dreaming, and possibly even drowning, while weightless in the colorful shades of blue. The ocean has been a source of strength and of reverence for me. When I swim, particularly underwater, elements of space & volume reinforce the magnificence of the water symbol. There are times when swimming that you feel so alone, others when you can stay under longer and dream, yet more times when you can simply surrender to the sea and give up. I photographed each nude in black and white in the studio then digitally created water patterns and textures to illustrate spatial and physical relationships between swimmer & water.

My regular use of the nude in my work exacts my views on the beauty of the human form which are anti-pornographic. I am regularly disappointed with cultural and societal disgracing of nudity and the human form. Why are feelings of shame, anger, violence associated with images of our nature? I don't condone pornography and it's graphic potent, but I do believe in appreciating what is most human.
